What is Banned Books Week?
Throughout history (and continuing today), schools and libraries have banned or received requests to ban books from their shelves. The American Library Association (ALA) promotes the freedom to express one's opinions, even if they might be considered unpopular. Below are some of the classics that have been banned or challenged:

Summer Reads
Summer is finally here! Looking for a great read to take poolside or by the beach? Try these terrific warm-weather titles.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
It is a great classic where a young girl who comes form nothing begins to make something of herself. A good challenge because of the different time period, but definitely worth the read. Will Jane survive? Will she find a home? Will she ever get married? I don't know, you will just have to read to find out!

Wuthering Heights By Emily Bronte
I was assigned to read this book for Honors English, and I thought I would not like it, but it was actually interesting. The story takes place in 19th century England on the moors. The main characters, Catherine and Heathcliff, are very complicated characters, which is what makes the book catch one's attention. The story is of the gothic-romance genre, so the unfortunate love between the two main characters is prevelent throughout the book. But just because this book was written 150 years ago doesn't mean that it's too boring - there are some ghosts in the story!
