Summer Reads

Summer is finally here!  Looking for a great read to take poolside or by the beach?  Try these terrific warm-weather titles.

Forbidden Boy by Hailey Abbott: When Julianne falls for Remi at a bonfire party, her summer is off to a perfect start.  Sure, her obnoxious new neighbors are muscling her family off their beachfront property, but she has weeks of fun in the sun to look forward to, a painting to finish, and an amazing guy to get to know.  Then Jules discovers that her awful new neighbors are Remi's parents. That makes him a forbidden boy—but she can't seem to let him go. What do you do when your worst enemy is also the boy of your dreams?  Teen Fic Abbott

Peaches by Jodi Lynn Anderson: Three Georgia peaches are in for one juicy summer...but Birdie would rather eat Thin Mints and sulk in the AC.  Leeda would prefer to sneak off with her boyfriend, Rex.  And Murphy just wants to cause a little mischief.  Together these three very different girls will discover the secret to finding the right boy, making the truest friends, and picking the perfect Georgia peach.  Teen Fic Anderson

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares: Carmen got the jeans at a thrift shop. They didn’t look all that great; they were worn, dirty, and speckled with bleach.  Nobody knows why, but the pants fit everyone perfectly.  Over a few bags of cheese puffs they decide to form a sisterhood, and take the vow of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.  The next morning, the journey of the pants--and the most memorable summer of their lives--begins.  Teen Fic Brashares

Summer and the City: A Carrie Diaries Novel by Candace Bushnell: Meet teenage Carrie Bradshaw as she hits the bright lights, big city of New York for the very first time!  Summer is a magical time in New York City and Carrie is in love with all of it--the crazy characters in her neighborhood, the vintage-clothing boutiques, the wild parties, and the glamorous man who has swept her off her feet. Best of all, she's finally in a real writing class, taking her first steps toward fulfilling her dream.   Teen Fic Bushnell

Seventeenth Summer by Maureen Daly:  Angie always thought high school romances were just silly infatuations that come and go.  She certainly never thought she would fall in love over one short summer.  But when she meets Jack, their connection is beyond any childish crush.  Suddenly, Angie and Jack are filling their summer with stolen moments and romantic nights.  But as fall grows closer, they must figure out if their love is forever, or just a summer they’ll never forget.  Teen Fic Daly

Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen: Ever since her parents began fighting, Auden has been unable to sleep at night.  Now, spending a summer at a charming beach town with her father and his new family, she has to find new places to pass the time she spends awake.  And so she meets Eli, a fellow insomniac who becomes her nighttime guide.  Together, they embark on parallel quests: for Auden, to experience the carefree teenage life she has missed; for Eli, to come to terms with the death of a friend. Teen Fic Dessen

The Joys of Love by Madeleine L'Engle: During the summer of 1946, 26-year-old Elizabeth is doing what she has dreamed of since she was a little girl: working as an apprentice actress at a summer theater company. She’s never felt so alive.  But soon she finds another passion: Kurt Canitz, the dashing young director of the company.  Elizabeth’s perfect summer is profoundly shaken when Kurt turns out to be not the kind of man she thought he was.  Teen Fic L'Engle

Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson: Taylor Edwards’ family might not be the closest-knit—everyone is a little too busy and overscheduled—but for the most part, they get along just fine. Then Taylor’s dad gets devastating news, and her parents decide that the family will spend one last summer together at their old lake house in the Pocono Mountains.   Crammed into a place much smaller and more rustic than they are used to, they begin to get to know each other again. And Taylor discovers that the people she thought she had left behind haven’t actually gone anywhere.  Her former best friend is still around, as is her first boyfriend…and he’s much cuter at 17 than he was at 12.  As the summer progresses and the Edwards become more of a family, they’re more aware than ever that they’re battling a ticking clock. Sometimes, though, there is just enough time to get a second chance—with family, friends, and love.  Teen Fic Matson

Peace, Love, & Baby Ducks by Lauren Myracle: Fifteen-year-old Carly has always relied on her sister, Anna. But when 14-year-old Anna turns plastic-perfect-pretty over the course of a single summer, everything starts to change. And there are boys involved, complicating things as boys always do. With warmth, insight, and humor, Lauren Myracle dives into the tumultuous waters of sisterhood and shows that even very different sisters can learn to help each other stay afloat.  Teen Fic McCall
